The 2021 women's Rugby World Cup in New Zealand is set to be postponed until next year because of the coronavirus pandemic, officials announced Tuesday.

The recommendation to delay the event, originally scheduled for September 18-October 16, until 2022, will be considered by the Rugby World Cup board and the World Rugby executive committee on March 8 and 9, the statement added.

World Rugby said in a statement they had come to this position based on "the evolution of the uncertain and challenging global Covid-19 landscape".

They added it had become clear following talks with the New Zealand government and participating unions that, given Covid-19 related uncertainties,: "It is just not possible to deliver the environment for all teams to be the best that they can be on the sport's greatest stage".
